Biography/Professional
Profile
Ms. Macfarlane joined the Foundry in January of 2005 and is currently
the Foundry’s Chief Technology Counsel. In addition to managing
the Foundry’s internal intellectual property portfolio, Ms.
Macfarlane provides ongoing support to various Foundry portfolio
companies in the area of intellectual property management; providing
continuity from the early stage filings, patent strategy and licensing,
to later stage activities such as claim strategy, due diligence
support (corporate and venture) and commercialization activities.
From
1999 to 2004, Ms. Macfarlane served as Technology Counsel for Thomas
J. Fogarty, M.D., a renowned physician/entrepreneur. Her responsibilities
included technology/opportunity review, litigation management, as
well as assisting in the formation and intellectual property development
for 7 spin-out companies. In addition, she provided ongoing guidance
to various Fogarty portfolio companies in the areas of intellectual
property strategy, licensing and senior management.
Previously,
Ms. Macfarlane served as part of the senior management team and
in-house counsel at several medical device start-up companies, including
TransVascular, Inc. (acquired by Medtronic), AneuRx, Inc. (acquired
by Medtronic), and VidaMed Inc. (through IPO). While at Medtronic,
following the AneuRx acquisition, Ms. Macfarlane was part of the
team developing the early vascular technology strategy, and was
responsible for spearheading a multi-million dollar acquisition
of key intellectual property for the vascular division.
Ms.
Macfarlane specializes in counseling early stage companies on intellectual
property strategy, including business development from a patent
perspective, licensing and portfolio management. She is an inventor
on two U.S. issued patents with others currently pending. During
law school, Ms. Macfarlane served as a judicial extern for the United
States District Court, Northern District of California Pro Se Habeas
Writ Division and is currently involved in various non-profit activities
in the community. Ms. Macfarlane received her BA in Business Administration
from San Francisco State University, and her J.D. from Golden Gate
University School of Law.
