Biography/Professional Profile
Hank Plain has been Vice-Chairman of the Foundry since July 2000. In this role he serves as an active Director and Advisor to medical device companies of all stages, providing expertise in founding, funding, product development and operational management.

In August of 2007, Mr. Plain joined Morgenthaler Ventures as a partner on their Life Sciences Team. Based in the Menlo Park, California office, the firm’s Life Science Team invests in early stage Medical Device and Biotech companies. Morgenthaler Ventures is a leading Venture Capital firm celebrating 39 years of helping build exceptional companies.

Mr. Plain was Chairman of the Board of Embolic Protection, Inc., helping to negotiate the acquisition of EPI by Boston Scientific in 2001. He was also a Director of TransVascular, Inc., which was acquired by Medtronic for an undisclosed amount in 2003.

Previously, Mr. Plain was President and CEO of Perclose. From 1993 until May 2000, Mr. Plain led Perclose from the product concept stage through product development, regulatory approvals and successful market launch to become the worldwide leader in vascular access site closure devices with over $100 million in sales in 2000. Mr. Plain successfully directed Perclose through an IPO, a secondary offering and
acquisition by Abbott Laboratories in November 1999.

Prior to joining Perclose, Mr. Plain was with Eli Lilly and Company for 12 years. He held various marketing and general management positions in the Pharmaceutical and Medical Device business units.

Mr. Plain is Chairman of the Board of Directors for Emphasys Medical, Satiety and Xtent (Nasdaq: XTNT). He is a Director of Acclarent, Access Closure, Ardian, Cabochon Aesthetics, Cierra, The Foundry, and the Pacific Foundation for Cardiovascular Research. He is also on the Board of Trustees of Woodside Priory School.
